Audit
Branch Manager
20+ years with DCAA
We
have always employed the concept of mentoring in DCAA. When
I first started, there were six or seven auditors in my office,
and there was always a person other than my boss that I could
go to for help and advice.
Although
it started out as mostly an informal practice, mentoring is
now a formal policy of the Agency. Each new auditor is assigned
a mentor. Having a mentor helps the new employee get acclimated
to the job, the contractor(s), the community, and in some
instances, to an entirely new cultural environment. I think
it works out very well. It eases anxiety about the new work
environment, gives the employee a model to emulate, and helps
them to become productive as soon as possible. The new auditors
react very positively, and the senior auditors who are the
mentors enjoy it too.
