Conference Grows Skills

By DCAA Staff Writer

DCAA has approximately 500 first line supervisors and over 200 attended DCAA’s Supervisor Conference in Denton, Texas. The three-day conference focused on developing self, teams and supervisory audit skills.

DCAA Director Terri Dilly opened the conference stating “our supervisors are the most important individuals in the Agency and we owe it to you to develop your skills so you are successful.”  Focusing on self-development, speakers discussed techniques for motivating employees and finding balance as a supervisor. Day two featured panelist from three Federal agencies who shared ideas for supervising in a hybrid environment. Other topics included employee engagement, team development, and labor relations. The final day focused on audit topics. Representatives from a major defense contractor and the Defense Contract Management Agency provided their perspective on working with DCAA, which provided insights many of the participants had not previously heard. Attendees also had the opportunity to attend optional morning and evening sessions to discuss personnel matters and their own career development with DCAA’s senior leaders.

For many of the attendees, this was their first conference since becoming a supervisor and networking with fellow supervisors allowed them to hear from peers and share ideas. Many of the attendees said all the presentations introduced ideas and techniques they will immediately use to better manage their team. Other attendees highlighted a session on motivation by Vice Admiral (Retired) Mewbourne as the most valuable presentation of the conference. Everyone felt the conference was a great event, one attendee even remarking "I have been to three supervisor conferences and this is by far the best!"

The remainder of DCAA’s supervisors will attend a similar conference in August to ensure they also have the skills to be successful.
