Expert Analysis by DCAA Aero San Diego Team Identifies Multimillion-Dollar Accounting Error

By DCAA Staff Writer

DCAA's Aero San Diego audit team recently protected more than $10 million in taxpayer money by uncovering a major accounting error by a government contractor. During their review, the auditors discovered that the contractor was double-billing the government for inventory. Specifically, the contractor charged the government once for writing down the value of its inventory as an indirect cost, and then charged the government a second time for the full original price of that same material when it was actually used on a contract.

Although the contractor argued that this practice was acceptable under standard accounting rules, the audit team proved otherwise. By analyzing several years of data from 2021 to 2024, the team demonstrated that this practice was a widespread and ongoing issue.

They shared their evidence with the Defense Contract Management Agency, which then issued an official order forcing the contractor to stop this practice immediately. The contractor is now required to calculate the total amount of overbilled funds since the practice began so that the money can be returned to the government. This successful effort highlights the vital role of financial oversight in keeping government contracting accountable.
